Holiday 2009 - Driving to Cali (Van Horn)

Well, we made it to Van Horn, TX for an overnight stay in a KOA cabin. It was an uneventful day until an 18-wheeler tried to run us off... no, make that he DID run us off the road. Scared the crap out of both of us, but we're alive and well (and so is the Prius) to talk about it. Pshew!

Nothing much else to report other than we're ready to crash. Another day of driving tomorrow, but we're heading for Tucson next where we'll meet Chile Chews in person! Awesome!

P.S. Midland/Odessa area has to be one of the most unattractive places I've ever seen. We tried to make a game out of it - "I spy something attractive." We both lost...

Yikes! Glad you're okay.

Do you like KOA cabins? I've only read bad things about them (from bicycle tourer's point of view)...and I know everyone's experiences vary...but what do you like about them?

Yikes! Be careful driving out there.

We stayed in some KOA campgrounds years ago and were not impressed. Even back then, some of them had full-time residents. We left one outside Sacramento at 3 am due to the seedy character of the folks staying there.

It will be much nicer staying here! :)

Sharli - At least I know my heart works great! :)

Beany - Yeah, we've stayed in them quite often. We have to bring a sleeping bag and pillows for the bed, and towels for the shower just across the way, but it's nice (and there's a heater) and it's about $40 vs the $70 for even a cheap hotel room (including brining the dog with us).

They're also quiet and everyone is always friendly.

Chile - We've stayed in a lot of them over the last few years and never felt that we weren't safe. But I agree, it'll be more fun staying at yours and Beany's place :)

The only time I have stayed at a KOA was for my honeymoon, and we were in a tent. The first week of February.

I'm glad you're alive! Sometimes semis are just....mean. If ya know whaddimean.

Krista - What did you think of the KOA? I suppose the trucker could have been mean. I think maybe he just never looked. I'm just glad it's over and we've had better luck since. At least I know the old ticker is working :)
