Last night, our
NWEI Menu For the Future course discussed Chapter 1, "What's Eating America." It is an introductory chapter to the culture behind food. The excerpts brought to my attention that I have very little social aspect to my meals. I can, in fact, go days without eating a meal with another human being (no, pets don't count). I worked hard this past week to correct that and go out of my way to experience meals with friends and family. Do you generally eat as a family or with a group? Or do to tend to eat alone?
One last thing... our "circle question" for the week was a fun one and I enjoyed listening to everyone's responses: Share a childhood memory of food. Mine were the fabulous breakfasts my dad cooked for us on Sundays. I can still picture him in front of the griddle working on french toast (my favorite). No one has ever made me french toast like daddy.
How about you? Have a childhood memory of food you'd like to share?

I eat two out of three weekday meals with my sweetie and all the weekend ones. I snack with other folks at the CSA, too. Does that count? A couple years ago, we had a tradition of someone bringing a baguette (or walking down the street to buy one) each week. We'd eat it with whatever veggies came in the share. The best "sandwiches" were ones with roasted green chiles, cucumber, and tomato. We also once had a killer salad with arugula, apples, and some lime juice (from limes brought in from a backyard tree). That one made it into our CSA recipe database as a keeper!
Childhood food memories? You gotta be kidding, Heather. Half my childhood memories revolve around food. I may have to post about them...
Chile - Absolutely! Any snack or meal with others definitely fits the bill as a social meal.
Looking forward to hearing some of your childhood memories. Do tell :)
I hope I get around to posting about it, Heather. I've got a list of things I've promised to post about but not gotten to, including an award from Rob months ago!
Here's a teaser, though. My sister and I always fought over who made better broken glass salad. My friends were scared to eat at my house when told they had to eat it, but they loved it.
Chile - Yeah, I think I'd be a little afraid too. Must be delicious to hook people on food with a name like that... :)
This recipe looks like what we made, except the graham cracker crust just lined a big salad bowl rather than a mold.
Chile - That DOES look yummy! I like anything with pineapple...
