Brazos Locavores- January Field Trip Announcement

Something for all you Bryan-College Station, TX locals..

A wonderful 2008 holiday season has passed but there is even more to look forward to in the coming year. With so many wonderful farms to visit in the Bryan-College Station area, it's the perfect time to join the Brazos Locavores, a group whose purpose is to connect with local producers and support a lifestyle of mindful eating.

Our next field trip is scheduled for Saturday, January 17. We'll be meeting at Brazos Natural Foods at 1:00 to carpool out to Wateroak Farms, just north of Bryan in Robertson County.

Wateroak Farms, owned by Mark and Pam Burrow, started in 1998 with just a few goats meant to supply the family with fresh milk. The farm quickly grew in herd and popularity and now sells a wide variety of products such as milk, yogurt, cheeses, and ice cream. Wateroak's ice cream was named one of the "Top 10 Desserts in 2003" by the Austin Chronicle Food Editor and their selection of cheese is used by some of Austin's top chefs. But you don't have to be a member of the farm to enjoy these delicacies, our very own Brazos Natural Foods stocks Wateroak Farms' products. To learn more about the farm, visit their website.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet the owners, tour the dairy, learn why eating local is the way to go, and meet some of your fellow locavores. This is also a great opportunity to educate our little ones about where good food originates.

Everyone is welcome! Please RSVP (via comments below or email) if possible so that I know about how many maps to prepare and be sure to let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you on the 17th!

P.S. Stay tuned for future field trip annoucements. With spring on its way, there will be lots of opportunities for exciting trips. We'll be visiting some of the farms of vendors from the farmers market, as well as picking local fruits at some of our areas best pick-your-own farms.

VeganCowGirl - I was so excited when I first heard about the group. I missed their first field trip, but jumped in by trip #2. Now, I'm organizing them which is perfect for me since I love connecting with local vendors. Talk about right up my alley!!! :)

Debra - That's wonderful! I'll put you on the list. I'm looking forward to meeting you and your kids!

I'm so excited to find a group like this! My boyfriend and I would like to go. Are kids okay?

Holli - Absolutely! Bring the kids. I think these trips are a perfect educational (and fun) opportunity. And one of the other attendees will be bringing his two kids as well so they'll be in good company. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Cool! My son had such a great time at Home Sweet Farm (we went on our own another time.) Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you too.

How was this?
I had my weekends confused. However, we ended up putting our garden in this weekend, so it was just as well. I'll be on the look out for next month's outing.
Thanks.
