Lois from the Bryan Farmers Market has been busy! Not only does she have the finest selection of fruits, veggies, herbs, and canned goods, (not to mention that dear woman kept me from starving all winter), she's also been sewing up a storm! The first two handmade canvas bags made their debut at the market 2 weeks ago. This week, she had blue ones too! They are all made of heavy duty material and completely machine washable. As promised, I bought a pretty green one. They each have a cute pocket sewn into the front (for my pocket book, she says). This will definitely be my day bag (not that I have a "night" bag - I'm usually in PJs by 8:00). What I mean is that this cute tote will be what I use to carry my wallet, keys, water bottle, library book, etc around town.
I also have a stock of other canvas and cotton bags that I use for groceries, visits to the farmers market, the dairy pickup, etc. Most of the canvas bags we have, we received free (yeah for free!) from the local recycling facility.
Another option is 100% organic cotton produce bags from Organic Needle. She makes them herself, by hand, and often blogs about her adventurous supply expeditions. I picked up her 3 pack earlier this month. These bags are soft and very lightweight. They are perfect for weighing fruits and veggies at the market, then storing them in the fridge. Thanks Organic Needle. I just love them!
And the best part - no paper or plastic! Of course, the key is to remember to bring one with you, right? I've just gotten in the habit of never leaving home without at least one. After having had lots of people stop and ask or comment about carrying my own bags, I realized that people really do notice. I can make a statement without saying a word! Just bag it!

Beautiful bag! I only have one with a pocket in the front and love it! I use it to carry all the other bags to the farmers' market and store my phone, keys and cash in the pocket. Of course, mine is nowhere near as cute as yours!
Thanks! I like it too and it's a huge bag. I can fit all kinds of stuff in there. I suppose I really didn't NEED a new bag, but Lois is just such a nice lady and I wanted to support her as much as I can (as I said, she did keep me alive and in vegetables all winter long).
It's funny. I've recently been musing about how hand-sewn reusable tote bags would be a great thing to see vendors selling at farmer's markets and street fairs. Beautiful, practical, and eco-friendly (and I've seen a lot of things sold at street fairs that were the complete opposite).

Kathryn - they are really nice. I use my bag almost every day. I just wish someone made produce bags to sell similar to organic needles. With all that produce there, you'd like someone would have something sustainable...
